How to play Word Deduction

Word Deduction gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Look at what changes after your first action.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

With APPLE as the answer and ALLEE as the guess, the first A and final E are in the right places. The extra L and E are not both counted as present. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
