How to play Shikaku

Try Shikaku at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Look at what changes after your first action. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.

Focus on one rule

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
  2. It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
  3. Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
  4. Cover every square to finish.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
