How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Choose a round of Mahjong Solitaire and settle into its rules. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Read the objective before making your first input. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Controls

Tap two free matching tiles. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
