How to play Backgammon

Bring your attention to one round of Backgammon. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Look for the relevant detail.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
